Stevia rebaudiana is a member of the Asteracea family. It is native to Brazil and Paraguay where it is found growing wild as a small shrub which may reach a height of as much as 80 cm at full maturity.
History has shown that Native Indians of the Guarani and Mato Grosso Tribes have used the leaves of the Stevia plant as an additive to their medicines and teas since pre-Columbian times. They called the plant Ca-he-he or Honey Leaf’.
During the sixteenth century, Spanish Conquistadors in South America learned of Stevia from the local Indians. Early European settlers added the leaves of the Stevia plant to their food and drinks and later the Gauchos of South and Central America used Stevia in their Mate tea.
Stevia was “rediscovered” in the late 1800’s by a South American Botanist named Antonio Bertoni. The unique biochemical properties of Stevia were first identified in 1908 and by 1931 Stevia was being crystallized for use in foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals.
Today, there are nearly 300 identified species of Stevia with over 80 species found to be growing wild in North America. Of all the identified species of Stevia, only Ste via rebaudiana possesses the unique, natural characteristics that generate interest as a dietary supplement.
